Time Lapse Dance - Bringing The Arctic Home
|
Description:
Time Lapse Dance brings the Arctic home with a program inspired by choreographer Jody Sperlings incredible experience in the Arctic. In 2014, Sperling was invited by oceanographer Robert Pickart to participate in a 43-day polar science mission, as choreographer-in-residence aboard an icebreaker. While the scientists collected data, Sperling danced on the frozen sea as research for Ice Cycle. Expressing the dynamism and fragility of the Arctic icescape, Ice Cycle is a collaboration with Alaskan-born composer Matthew Burtner. Choreographer and composer share a passion for ice and aim to bring its many phases and transformations to life through movement and music. Sperling and her ensemble of five women dancers crystalize into icy kaleidoscopic patterns and melt into turbulent eddies. Innovative costuming, lighting and projections help the company suggest the ever-shifting topography of ice.
