JUNG-HO PAK, CONDUCTOR PHILIPPE QUINT, VIOLIN
The Adventures of Robin Hood made Warner Brothers millions and Errol Flynn the greatest action hero of his generation. The 1938 film saved Erich Korngolds life. Literally. While the Jewish composer was in Hollywood working on the swashbucklers score, Hitler invaded his homeland. There was no going back to Austria. And thats how some of Europes Wunderkinder, composers at the height of their creative powers, decided the soundtrack of the fledgling movie industry was as classical as a Strauss tone poem. Korngold scored some of Hollywoods best flicks: Kings Row (Ronald Reagans break-out movie), Anthony Adverse (which won the 1937 Oscar for Best Movie Score) and Sea Hawk (another gripping Errol Flynn adventure). But Hollywood didnt make Korngold; Korngold made Hollywood, says Philippe Quint, who fell instantly in love with the composers violin concerto and received a Grammy nomination in 2009 for his definitive recording of it. John Williams of Star Wars fame is also a self-professed Korngold fan, and well have a little fun pointing it out as we travel to another musical galaxy.
