Description:
CHAMP Homes is pleased to announce that several volunteers have started organizing a Supper Club. This is a great way for CHAMP residents to be involved with other members of the community, over a special dinner, prepared by volunteers. Two of those volunteers are Peter and Kara Duff from Brewster. One Saturday a month, they come down to Hyannis to prepare a meal for CHAMP residents. Kara Duff says: The idea came about when we (the class) were assigned a small group project in our Community Leadership Institute (CLI) class. I thought it would be nice to create and cook a meal and sit down with people and simply be present. I wanted it to be made with healthy and whole ingredients but also have it be really yummy-like the way my husband cooks. This was the experience I wanted to provide. I asked Pete and he was all for it! This is a great way to be involved in Community. It doesn't have to be complicated. You just offer what you can do and do it. The more people out there sharing, whether it is their story, their skills, or their veggies, the more connected and happier the community. The work that CHAMP Homes does in helping those in our community to have a roof over their head, and a hot meal means more than you know. Peter adds: My family and I know personally how important a home is in creating a solid foundation, a sense of worth, and that safe place from which to sprout wings and fly. I am blessed that I have my time and talent to offer to such a wonderful organization! On the first night, Peter made falafel. Everyone enjoyed it and many at the table had never heard of it but they tried it anyway. It was so great to see people asking for seconds and some even had thirds! The second night. Peter made fish tacos, with striped bass kindly donated by Macs Seafood in Eastham. He served it with a nectarine salsa, fresh cabbage slaw with a chipotle lime dressing, and an avocado cream. CHAMP Homes was established by our beloved founders, Paul and Carolyn Hebert, in 1991 and since then has helped over 2,400 individuals on Cape Cod. It currently provides housing to over 65 residents, aged 17 to 80. Many of these residents are at-risk individuals who suffer from mental, physical and emotional disabilities or are recovering from addiction and have never experienced a loving family environment. CHAMP Homes is a place where people receive the gift of security, as well as ample opportunities to attain the tools and experience necessary to become self-supportive through education, career and life skills training. For more information about CHAMP Homes and Pilot House, please call 508-771-0885, write to us at 82 School Street, Hyannis, MA 02601 or visit our website, www.CHAMPHomes.org.
