Directed by Roberta Grossman (Blessed is the Match) and produced by Nancy Spielberg, this engrossing documentary tells the true wartime adventure story of a group of World War II pilots who volunteered and risked their lives to fight for Israel in the War of Independence in 1948. The bravery of these volunteers was incredible, as the only aircraft available were American and German fighter jets junked after the war that were prone to mechanical failure.

More than a retelling of the 48 Arab-Israeli War, Above and Beyond examines the motivations of the foreign volunteers  both Jews and non-Jews. It mines the tensions between the Israelis and Machal soldiers and recounts the personal stories of these young pilots, whose lives where forever affected by their service. Grossmans film reveals how under-equipped and isolated the Israelis were, how desperately they needed planes and pilots, and how critical the actions of these young American men were for the countrys survival.
