Description:
The 14th annual Seaside Le Mans dubbed The Race for the Cape Cod Community will be held Saturday on a track set up at Mashpee Commons. It's a fast-moving, family-friendly race for charity that spectators can watch for free.
Festivities kick off at 11:30 a.m. with a patriotic opening ceremony featuring live music by We Are the Men and remarks by U.S. Congressman Bill Keating as grand marshal. The race begins at noon, and as many as 10,000 spectators are expected to gather to watch the four-hour endurance race featuring European-style Formula One race karts on a quarter-mile outdoor track.
There's no stopping: Teams keep moving by changing drivers and refueling, and jockeying for position as they pass each other to race around corners and along straightaways.
Spectators can view the race either from outside the track or from the infield reached by a pedestrian bridge. The event also includes music, entertainment and children's activities.
Returning this year will be a medical tent hosted by Cape Cod Healthcare, the official medical care provider for the race, as well as a blood drive to support the Cape Cod Healthcare Blood Center. Media sponsors Cape & Plymouth Business Magazine and Cape Cod Broadcasting will be on site as well as the Coca-Cola sampling truck. Since its inception, the race has raised more than $4.5 million dollars in sponsorships and matching grants for local nonprofit organizations. Beneficiaries of the 2014 race will be Cape Cod Healthcare, Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center, Cape Cod Regional Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative, Cape Cod Baseball League and Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
