Description:
In late summer 1914, the assassination of an Austrian Archduke touched off a four-year war that eventually engulfed almost 70 countries in the first global conflict in history. Eventually, four empires were toppled, there were 9 million casualties, and the groundwork was lain for World War II.
The Harwich Historical Society's Brooks Academy Museum will open for the season Sunday, with free admission all day and a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. for the new World War I exhibit, Harwich and the War to End All Wars at the museum at 80 Parallel St.
The exhibit tells the stories of those from the town who served in uniform or were civilians on the homefront, using a display of uniforms, military equipment, photos, letters, posters and memorabilia.
