Description:
In one of New England's largest and most moving Memorial Day tributes, Cape Cod Cares For the Troops will sponsor its 10th annual Troops in the Spotlight observance beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Kmart Plaza on Route 132 in Hyannis.
Holding centerstage during the event will be members of the armed services, with four at a time standing at rigid attention, changing hourly to keep the stage full for 24 hours. Their presence will pay tribute to veterans, wounded warriors, and the Gold and Blue Star families of those who have died and those who are currently deployed.
The stage scene will include a changing of the guard ceremony each hour. A spotlight will illuminate them throughout the night and early-morning hours.
The group also sends supplies for humanitarian aid missions to villages, schools, orphanages and medical and dental clinics in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
The group's goal over Memorial Day weekend is to fill an 18-foot truck with care-package supplies and to raise $18,000 to both help with the cost of shipping and to provide financial aid to wounded men and women, military families and veterans.
Suggestions for donations and care-package needs are listed on the organization's website. Donors may also sponsor a complete individual care package for $60.
On display at the event throughout the weekend will be an 80-foot-long Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial Wall that was created by the Yarmouth Moose Lodge and contains the name of every member of the U.S. military killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
