Description:
Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Washes Ashore in Wellfleet and She is Undocumented

A performance piece created and performed by Melissa Nussbaum Freeman, recipient of a Wellfleet Cultural Council Grant. Free. All Ages

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, 1648-1695, had to become a nun in order to continue her passion for learning. Today she washes ashore, still in search of a better life, she is undocumented...and cleaning your house.

According to the 2010 Census there was a 56% increase of people who identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino in Barnstable County. Beyond what is commercially promoted, few local residents are aware of the cultural richness Hispanics bring to Cape Cod.

Performance artist Melissa Nussbaum explores the hidden presence of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (Sister Joan Agnes of the Cross) in this new performance piece with music, poetry and essays written by the famed nun. The goals of this show are twofold: to introduce the general public to a great literary figure of the Baroque period and by questioning assumptions made about undocumented and domestic workers create a bridge of cultural understanding within our community. The show has innovative elements: video interviews of Hispanic women who speak about the importance of Sor Juana in their own lives and an interactive Q & A game with Sor Juana (played by Melissa).
