Cape Cods first family of art, the Malicoats, has had a profound influence shaping the culture of the art community for four generations, The Higgins Gallery at Cape Cod Community College celebrates its twentieth year with an exhibit of sculptures, paintings, and drawings created by Malicoat family artists and spanning four generations.
This multifaceted family includes writers, musicians, founders of museums and societies, printmakers, designers, sculptors and stone masons, painters. The enduring legacy of this family is the collective influence they have had on the regions art life and community in general. Family has been a lifelong source of inspiration for all these artists. Strongly individualistic in style, technique, and genre, each family member exhibits a strong sense of self coupled with a familys passion for art.
Coming to Provincetown in the summers of the late 1920s to study painting, Phil Malicoat became a year round resident in 1931. He studied drawing with E. W. Dickinson and also worked in the studio of Charles Hawthorne. In 1932 he married Barbara Brown, a fellow artist and daughter of an established family of artists who were the founders of Provincetown Art Association and Museum and long time residents of Provincetown. The legacy of the Malicoat family continued with the next generation, the children of Phil Malicoat and Barbara Brown, Martha Dunigan and Conrad Malicoat, are accomplished artists known for their unique sculptures. The grandchildren of Phil Malicoat continue the legacy. Robena Malicoat, a painter works in her grandfathers old studio space, Breon Dunigan, sculptor, drawer and printmaker lives and works in Truro with her husband the artist Bob Bailey.
Phil Malicoat was named an honorary vice president of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in 1943 while also teaching at the Cape Cod Conservatory of Art and Music in Hyannis. He worked as a commercial fisherman, trawling out of Chatham, and was aboard the sailing research vessel the Atlantis out of Woods Hole. His granddaughter, Breon Dunigan, has his journal of that trip. Phil Malicoat was also a member of the fabled Beachcombers, a storied mens only club of Provincetown artists whose commitment to art and the fabled Saturday Night Suppers continue.
There will be a Gallery Reception on Friday, September 18 from 5-7pm in the Tilden Arts Center at Cape Cod Community College. The reception is free and refreshments will be served.
On Thursday, October 1, gallery curator Betty Fuller will hold a Brown Bag Lunch Gallery Talk from 1-2pm. Bring your bag lunch and join this free event to be held in the lobby of the Tilden Arts Center.
