Description:
The Woods Hole Film Festivals Kids Day features the premieres of four short documentary films on Sunday, July 28, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Falmouth Academys Simon Center for the Arts (7 Highfield Drive, Falmouth). Three are part of the festivals growing Bringing Science to the Screen program: the New England premiere of Ocean Quest Xprize Competition Documentary directed by Danny Kim and Shane Vermooten; the world premiere of The Kodiak Queen directed by Rob Sorrenti; and the North American premiere of Alaska to Hawaii An Epic Journey directed by Rémi Cans. The fourth, Cape Cod: A Journey to the Bigs, directed by Laura Mickelson and Loren Mendall, focuses on Cape Cods summer baseball league. The films are geared to children age 10+ and their families.

Ocean Quest Xprize Competition Documentary profiles students from Valley Christians Junior High and High School Ocean Discovery team as they experience the ups and downs of the XPrize Global Mapping Challenge, a contest to map the ocean floor while competing for $7 million in prize money. The members of the schools team became the youngest students ever to make it to the semi-final round of any XPRIZE challenge--competitions designed to solve humanitys grand challenges. The films message of youthful ambition, innovation, environmental exploration, and creative problem solving will inspire young and old alike.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet narrates and Rob Sorrenti directs the documentary short The Kodiak Queen, which depicts Richard Bransons efforts to inspire a generation of ocean lovers by transforming a decorated WWII warship that survived Pearl Harbor into an artificial reef and dive site in the British Virgin Islands. Alaska to Hawaii profiles a particular group of humpback whales that make the arduous trek between Alaska and Hawaii each year; their annual arrival on Hawaii signifies the return of the aboriginal populations ancestors. Cape Cod: A Journey to the Bigs follows three college-age baseball players playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summer of 2017, who achieve varying degrees of success. Besides sharing the experience of playing on the Cape, they all share a dream to make it to the show.

The festival is supported in part by grants from the Mass Cultural Council, Mass Festivals, Falmouth Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation and the Cape Cod 5 Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation in support of Bringing Science to the Screen, Marthas Vineyard Savings Bank, and Woods Hole Foundation.
