Description:
Beginning November 19, Christmas Creches, In the Company of Angels will once again grace the Museum's special exhibition gallery. The focus of this year's display is angels and their appearance in the nativity scene.
Angels or winged human figures have been subject of artists since the time of the ancient Greek and Mesopotamian civilizations. Over the centuries, artists' interpretations of angels often reflected their culture and religion, but the concept of a winged being remained the same. The inclusion of angels in nativity scenes was a natural progression. With the expansion of the creche beyond the core figures of Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus, artists added angels, heralding the birth of Jesus, as well as animals, shepherds and the Magi into their often complex interpretations of the nativity scene.
In partnership with the Cape Cod Creche Society,as well as private collectors, the exhibition will feature the rare and exotic, with nativity scenes from around the world. Christmas Creches, In the Company of Angels will be on display from November 19 until December 30.
