Calliope, a Community for Poets, meets at the Library on the third Sunday of the month from 3-5pm, and includes three featured poets followed by an open mic. The November 17 reading will feature Shelby Allen, Susan Nissenbaum-Becker and Gary Whited.There is a $5 suggested donation to fund the poets stipend, and refreshments will be served. Open mic sign-up begins at 2:45pm.
Allen is reading from her first collection, Crack Willow: Poems of Transformation (Cherry Grove Collections). Her poems and essays have been published in Sanctuary, New Millennium Writings, The Lucid Stone, The Boston Globe, The New York Times and Christian Science Moniter. Allen is the recipient of the Emily Dickinson Award from Universities West Press and the Boston Herald Poetry Prize, among other honors.
Playwright, actor, arts organizer and poet Nissenbaum-Becker is reading from her just released, first book of poems, Little Architects of Time and Space (WordPress, October 2103). Nissenbaum-Beckers poems have been published in Comstock Review, Phoebe, Poetry East, Salamander and other journals. Her work was nominated for a 2012 Pushcart Prize. She has been awarded writing fellowships at Canadas Banff Center for the Arts, Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony.
Gary Whited is a poet philosopher and psychotherapist. Having Listened, Whiteds first collection of poems was published by Homebound Publications in September 2013.
