Description:
This illustrated presentation covers the landscapes Edward Hopper painted, and how they have changed since 1930. It also points out the many examples of artistic license that Hopper used over and over in his Outer Cape work, compared to what the buildings and landscapes look like today. In some cases, Ms. Chapman believes he included ancillary structures that were not possible for him to see, given the perspectives of the paintings. He did this because, she surmises, the other structures interested him and anchored the paintings to their locale. This interesting program encompasses the Town Pier in Wellfleet to Highland Light in North Truro and clearly shows Hopper as a realist painter who captured a great deal of Old Cape Cod that we still see and love every day.

Beth Chapman is self-described as a lover of family history, not an art history expert. She has summered in South Truro since birth and bought property in Wellfleet in 2000. The realization that Hopper had painted her father's family farm five times, started her on a quest to identify as many as possible buildings and vistas painted by him in this area. Consequently, Ms. Chapman has been running tours of some of Edward Hopper's houses and landscapes in Wellfleet and Truro throughout the summer and fall. What Hopper found interesting to paint, I call home, she says.
