Stanley & Grimm, a Falmouth-based fiddle and guitar duo, will celebrate the release of their new CD, Open the Gate, on Sunday, July 11 at 8:00 pm, at the Woods Hole Community Hall, 68 Water St., Woods Hole, Mass. The performance will feature selections from their new recording, which explores a colorful range of old and new Celtic- influenced songs, reels, jigs, hornpipes, and even a little jazz... Also performing will be Susan Gedutis Lindsay on Irish flute, who is a guest artist on the CD, as well as several of Engstroms award-winning students, Oliver Newman (14), Meg Falcone (13), Joe Bergeron (14), and Hunter Engstrom (12), collectively known as the Sonnay Brat Pack. Tickets are $10.00 at the door. More information about Stanley & Grimm is available at http://www.stanleyandgrimm.com. According to Dan Hallissey, host of Bostons popular Irish Rambler Radio Show, STANLEY & GRIMM have a wonderfully pure, organic and authentic sound that makes them rank among the finest entertainers on this side of the Atlantic. Their arrangements and playing ability enables them to produce an acoustic tapestry which is close to perfection. On Open the Gate, Stanley & Grimm take their Celtic-influenced modern traditional music on a world tour with jigs and reels straight out of Ireland, fiddle tunes from Scotland, Cape Breton, Sweden, and the United States, an original tune named for Nikkis son, and a playful pairing of a popular Irish seisiun tune, The Mason's Apron, with the classic Broadway standard, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Woven through the instrumentals are songs that range from the traditional favorite Carrickfergus, to newer hits from Irish songwriters Luka Bloom and the Sawdoctorsas well as the Galway Girl, from American roots songwriter Steve Earle. Stanley and Grimm (fiddler Nikki Engstrom and singer/guitarist Sean Brennan) lead listeners into a celebration of traditional music through old and new interpretations of jigs, reels, and songs played with lively fiddle, guitar, and voice. Their last CD, Another Round, was awarded the Celtic Radio Music Award for the 2008 Album of the Year, and also took top honors in the Jigs & Reels category. The Celtic Radio Network describes their music as emotionally stirring, exhilarating, perfectly splendid! The infectious fun they have on stage and their intense playing have helped them to become fan favorites on the New England traditional music scene. Nikki Engstrom is an accomplished, award-winning fiddler who teaches at workshops and plays festivals while maintaining more than 30 full-time private students on Cape Cod. She has performed, competed, and taught throughout New England and Canada. In addition to her intensely inspired fiddle playing, Nikki has composed many original tunes, including Little Hawk and The Huntress. Sean Brennan has been playing in sessions and entertaining in pubs for many years in Boston and on Cape Cod, performing as guest accompanist for well-known artists such as Eamon Coyne, Patsy Whelan, and the late Jerry Holland, as well as regular performances with Dublin balladeer Dave Hickey. In addition to the diverse ballads and songs Sean has collected in his extensive repertoire, he has also written many of his own songs, including fan favorites Galway Senorita and Last Nights Fun. Stanley & Grimm's name originates from the makers of Nikkis fiddle and bow, fiddlemaker and inventor of the Stanley steam engine, F.O. Stanley, and Grimm, respectively.
