Description:
David Wright, a long time lover of mountains, will talk about trekking in the Nepal Himalayas as a septuagenarian. Having first trekked in Nepal in 2010 with his son, David returned both in 2011 and 2012 with old friends, & and he is already plotting yet another expedition in 2013. Illustrated by photos & maps of the trekking paths through the superb scenery of the Everest National Park and the Annapurna Sanctuary, his talk will cover the different routes, the effects of altitude, the Sherpa people, the pleasures (and perils) of Nepalese lodges on the high routes, the pros and cons of hiring porters and how anyone who is reasonably fit can enjoy such a trekking experience.
David was introduced early to mountains by his father over many family holidays in the Lake District in England. When he was nineteen he took a months course with Outward Bound in the Lakes which introduced him to rock climbing and he has since walked and climbed extensively - in N. Wales, in the Cuillins on Skye, in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps (Mt Blanc), in East Africa (Mt Kilimanjaro) and New Zealand (Mt Cook). He had the privilege of three seasons in the Alps in the early 1970s, climbing in the company of Michael Westmacott, the youngest (and sadly just deceased) member of the successful 1953 expedition to Everest. David is member of the Climbers Club and the Alpine Club of Britain.
But, according to David, none of this experience is necessary to enjoy trekking in the Himalayas. Anyone who has walked from hut to hut in the White Mountains would love trekking in the Nepal Himalayas. Its addictive be warned!
