Before the coming of steam and diesel ships, a whale hunt was a relatively even contest between two mammalsman and the sperm whale. In The Hunted Whale, James McGuane takes viewers to New England ports as they struggled to dominate a global industry. Facts, explanatory notes, and tales from the sea accompany over 250 photographs, which all look to identify the various motivations that turned ordinary men into whale hunters. Also included is a riveting firsthand account of the hunt, excerpted from naturalist Robert Cushman Murphys logbook while he was aboard the whaleship Daisy in 1912.
