Director Denys Arcand brings together characters from his 1986 hit, The Decline of the American Empire, in this film dealing with the universal subject of mortality. Rémy has cancer, and his ex-wife convinces their estranged son, Sébastien, to visit Rémy before he dies. Reconciliation seems unlikely at the start, until Sébastien brings Rémy's old friends to visit. Far more than a film about death, The Barbarian Invasions brings a group of old friends together and allows them to share their histories, philosophies and love.
