Description:
Atlantic Public Media is bringing the co-host of public radio's Radiolab to Cape Cod to present a talk on the challenges involved in telling stories, particularly stories about science. The event will be held at 7:30 pm on Sunday, August 19th at MBLs Lillie Auditorium, 7 MBL Street, in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Abumrad is the co-host and co-creator (with Robert Krulwich) of the cult-sensation Radiolab, the inventive public radio program about big ideas in science. His background in music composition infuses the programs rhythm and style.

Abumrad was named a 2011 MacArthur Genius Fellow. Hes been called a master of the radio craft for his unique ability to combine cutting edge sound-design, cinematic storytelling, and a personal approach to explaining complex topics, from the stochasticity of tumor cells to the mathematics of morality.

His talk will explore the idea of tension in his own upbringing, then move into the idea of tension in the craft of audio storytelling the tension between words and music, between story and science.

APMs Executive Director, Jay Allison, says, Jad is one of the few people who have actually created a new style of storytelling, a new way of blending sound and voice into something musicalboth familiar and strange, primal and sophisticated. Abumrad studied creative writing and music composition at Oberlin College, and in the past has composed music for film, theater and dance. This event is a benefit for Atlantic Public Media, Inc. and its Peabody Award-winning website Transom.org, a showcase and workshop for new public media. In addition to founding our local NPR station, WCAI, APM produces The Moth Radio Hour (also a Peabody winner) and created the popular NPR series, This I Believe, and many other national projects, including the Transom Story Workshop, an eight-week training for beginning radio producers, in Woods Hole.
