Description:
Take in an old fashioned base ball game as the Providence Grays Vintage Base Ball Club comes to town to play the game with 19th century rules and equipment, reminiscent of teams from bygone years.

Kicking off the event, the public will be invited to participate in a game of old-fashioned base ball or “town ball”, based on the English game of rounders and considered the precurser to modern-day baseball. Under the earlier rules, batters could call for high or low pitches; six balls drew a walk and most players caught the ball bare-handed. Joining the fun will be members of the Harwich Mariners and other local players. The Providence Grays will then take the field to play a base ball game, wearing their old-style uniforms and using period equipment and 19th century rules.

Admission is free. The game is sponsored by the Harwich Historical Society and funded by a grant from the Harwich Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural council, a state agency. Additional support for this event is being provided by the Hot Stove Saloon on Route 28 in Harwich Port, which is providing lunch for the players.

The base ball game is being held in conjunction with the Society’s exhibit on baseball “Harwich Boys of Summer”, which takes a nostalgic look at the sport in Harwich, from the early years to present-day teams. The exhibit is open during museum hours: Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. through October 11. Brooks Academy Museum is located at 80 Parallel Street in Harwich.
