Description:
Cotuit Center for the Arts is very excited to present our newest Gallery Exhibition: REMEMBERED ENCOUNTERS: Solo Exhibition of Recent Work by MARY MOQUIN, on view from May 29 through June 27, 2010. This solo exhibit will feature the new oil paintings of this local artist, whose use of light, texture and layered color creates a sense of solitude and unity between architecture and the prevailing forces of nature. Mary Moquin paints landscapes. Terrain, sea and sky, time of day, and time of year are all elements she considers, though she is most concerned with the invention taking place throughout the layered surfaces of her playing field. Simple, straight ahead compositions, many created with architectural structures set into or against the landscape, serve as blueprints for Marys paint experiments in shifting light and space to alter the dimensions, distances and connections between planes. The success of the experiments hinges on her ability to draw very well, her concept of the abstract roles colors play in non abstract painting and how to mix these colors beautifully. While viewing the paintings, one senses Marys quest for discovery, new ideas interacting with old memories, the need for silent contemplation on some things new and some things eternal and the knowledge that nature has no conclusions. Since its conception Cotuit Center for the Arts has encouraged artists to avoid the commonplace, to explore, experiment, and communicate to increase the awareness and understanding of the creative process. Through her works on display, as our artist-in-residence and Wednesday workshops on materials and methods throughout the duration of the exhibit, Mary is promoting our mission and contributing generously to the entire arts community on Cape Cod.
