Description:
Come celebrate Earth Day and Cape Cods marine environment! Kara Dodge (University of New Hampshire, & UMass Large Pelagics Research Center) and Kimberly Murray (NOAA Fisheries, Protected Species Branch) will present current research on leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles, two species found off Cape Cod on a seasonal basis. Since 2007, Kara has worked with a team of scientists, fishermen and spotter pilots to place satellite tags on 20 leatherbacks, following their spectacular long-distance migrations from Cape Cod to the tropics, and discovering new information about their movements, dive behavior and feeding habits. Kimberly will describe NOAAs efforts to understand and mitigate interactions between commercial fishing gear and loggerhead turtles, as well as field research currently being conducted in the Mid-Atlantic to better understand loggerhead behaviors at sea.
