Description:
The Cape Cod Concert Band, under the direction of John P. Hagon, will present Forty and Fabulous: A Happy Birthday Pops Concert at 3 p.m. at the Pope John Paul II High School Auditorium, 120 High School Road, Hyannis.
The program was selected by band members, many of whom have played with the group for 20 or more years. In the tradition of a learning ensemble, members voted not for the tried and true, but for music they wanted a chance to perform, including Gustav Holst's First Suite for Military Band and Robert Russell Bennett's arrangement of selections from George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess. Other concert highlights include James Horner's movie music from Titanic, and Old Ironsides, a recently discovered march by John Philip Sousa. To mark the 40th birthday, the band will play Happy Birthday Around the World, a novelty piece that calls for 17 percussion instruments. The concert will also honor band founder Tony Stevens, who first organized the group as the Cape Cod Wind Ensemble in 1974.
Admission is free.
