It may still seem like the middle of winter to the rest of us, but our local owls are starting to think about spring nesting season already.
The great horned owl is the first bird to start nesting every year in Massachusetts. After pair bonding and finding a nest site during December and January, these owls are ready to lay eggs around Superb-Owl Sunday (or in early February). They may use an old hawk or crow nest, whereas the Eastern screech owl will spend the early winter searching for nest cavities or man-made nest boxes to lay their eggs in the spring.
This year we think both species have chosen a nest site close to our Barnstable Great Marsh Sanctuary as they have been very vocal in that area lately. Join us in our search for things that go hoot in the night!
This program meets at Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.
